PLASMA EXTRACELLULAR VESICLES: NOVEL INSIGHTS REGARDING SYSTEMIC CARRIERS AND MEDIATORS OF EXERCISE BENEFITS
Skeletal muscle contraction can induce alterations in mechanical tension, metabolism, blood perfusion, metabolites, temperature, and pH that initiate defense mechanisms and beneficial adaptations to improve resistance to stress. The release of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory cytokines, pro-angiogenic mediators, and immune regulators, or “exerkines”, into the circulatory system during exercise ensures that adaptation is not limited to muscle but is integrated throughout the whole organism. Recent published studies suggest that small nanosized vesicles, or extracellular vesicles (EVs) circulating in the blood after exercise may be enriched in exerkines, providing the opportunity to isolate and utilize EVs as an exercise mimetic. In this session, Prof. Boppart will share recent preclinical data suggesting that EVs circulating in blood after exercise possess molecular cargo that can induce beneficial effects in skeletal muscle and brain. The results suggest future opportunity for natural or manufactured EVs to address critical and unmet needs in the field of rehabilitation medicine.

SKELETAL MUSCLE PLASTICITY WITH DISUSE AND AGING-ROLE OF EXERCISE
Skeletal muscle undergoes significant changes in response to periods of disuse and advancing age, often resulting in declines in muscle mass, strength, and physical function. This presentation will provide an overview of how disuse and aging influence skeletal muscle and will highlight current evidence supporting exercise as an effective strategy to preserve muscle function.
